After months of debates and overreactions, the San Francisco 49ers found common ground on a long-term extension with quarterback Brock Purdy.
The former seventh-round steal turned Pro Bowler signed a five-year, $265 million extension with the 49ers this season that keeps Purdy as the team's franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future.
While many analysts around the league have criticized the 49ers for paying Purdy over $50 million annually, the 49ers locker room is thrilled with the announcement.
Trent Williams, the future Hall-of-Fame tackle for San Francisco, clarified his thoughts on the extension.
"It's super, super fulfilling just to watch a guy like Brock. When you talk about a Cinderella story, I think this is the epitome of that," Williams said. "Guy's going from making a few hundred thousand a year to making fifty million a year is astronomical.
"It couldn't have happened to a better guy. He is the guy for this team. He is the guy for this franchise."
When Williams speaks, everyone tends to listen. The fact that Purdy has earned the respect of a top veteran like this cannot be overstated. He has been to the Super Bowl once in his career while helping the 49ers reach the Conference Title Game twice.
The lone goal he needs to accomplish now is to find a way to not only get back to the Super Bowl but also win it.
While Purdy has his work cut out for him there, the 49ers believe they can reach those heights with their quarterback leading the way.
