49ers and Brandon Aiyuk: Garafolo sets record straight on speculation

Mike Garafolo isn't buying the predictions that the San Francisco 49ers will struggle in 2025 following their disappointing 6-11 record in 2024. In fact, he likes their chances of going from worst to first in the NFC West.

During a segment on NFL Network's The Insiders, Garafolo explained that the 49ers' upcoming schedule lines up favorably thanks to their last-place finish in the division. However, he stopped short of calling it the easiest schedule in the NFL, emphasizing, "It's the NFL and nothing is easy and nothing is soft."

The team's biggest advantage, Garafolo noted, will be staying healthy. The 49ers endured an injury-riddled 2024 campaign, a key factor in their poor finish. Heading into training camp, though, San Francisco is free of significant drama, having already secured long-term contract extensions with three franchise cornerstones—quarterback Brock Purdy, tight end George Kittle, and linebacker Fred Warner.

For those searching for controversy, speculation has swirled around wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is still recovering from ACL and MCL injuries suffered last season. Some have questioned whether Aiyuk is unhappy with the organization, reading too much into—and possibly misinterpreting—his social media activity.

What's clear is that Aiyuk is frustrated with the ongoing trade rumors, which he points out don't make much sense given his current recovery status. The receiver is unlikely even to be available for the start of the 2025 season.

"They was talking bout trading me while I was off percocets /muscle relaxers and peeing in a cup by my bed!" Aiyuk recently wrote. "Couldn't walk for 10 weeks ain't nobody trading for me."

Garafolo set the record straight on the speculation, saying there's no rift between Aiyuk and the team.

"Now, I know folks are reading into Brandon Aiyuk's comments as he makes his way back from an ACL injury," Garafolo said. "My understanding is Brandon Aiyuk is in a really good space with the team. They've got to get him healthy and keep him focused. If they do, that's another add back to the mix with all this talent on the team."

Head coach Kyle Shanahan has already indicated Aiyuk is unlikely to be ready for the start of training camp, with most expecting the team to place him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to open the season. That would sideline him for at least the first four games.

Still, the 49ers remain hopeful that Aiyuk can return at some point during the season and potentially contribute down the stretch.
