49ers Cut Recent 2nd-Round Defensive Lineman for Failed Physical

Sometimes an NFL team has to admit that they made a mistake when they picked a certain player in a draft, and that is exactly what the San Francisco 49ers just did.

Per a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Niners are cutting defensive lineman Drake Jackson, who they selected with the 61st pick in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

"49ers are waiving former second-round pick Drake Jackson with a failed physical designation, per source," Schefter said. "Jackson is still rehabbing a knee injury but is expected to be cleared by the start of training camp."

Injuries have plagued Jackson ever since he was drafted on Day 2 of the 2022 draft. He appeared in 15 games his rookie year, 8 games his sophomore year, and he has not taken the field for the Niners since then.

He was solid in that time, getting six sacks and even deflecting nine passes at the line of scrimmage. But he could not maintain it, as injuries then took him off the field and have kept him off.

Now, he has a chance to be signed by a new team and get a fresh start, something that could be good for his career. He will have a chance to show that there is a reason he was a second-round pick.

As for the 49ers, they just drafted an edge rusher with their first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. They will be hoping that Mykel Williams can be the star opposite Nick Bosa that they have been looking for.
