The 2025 season will be a big one for Colton McKivitz.
Now heading into Year 6, the San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman will be in line for a decent contract extension if he stays healthy and plays well.
Noting McKivitz “could be in line for a massive raise from the 49ers next year,” Kyle Madson of USA Today’s Niners Wire believes the 28-year-old O-lineman’s situation this coming season should be a sneaky-important one for San Francisco.
“Entering 2025 it doesn’t appear McKivitz will break the bank as a free agent,” Madson wrote on July 1. “Some may even argue the 49ers would be okay letting him walk and replacing him with a draft pick. However, over the last two years McKivitz has gone from a passable RT to something closer to an above-average starter.”
Will San Francisco lock him down or let him walk? Let’s discuss.
OL Colton McKivitz Could Be in for ‘Sizable Raise’ in Contract, Salary

GettyColton McKivitz of the San Francisco 49ers could command a high salary and a new contract after the 2025 season.
“There’s a chance McKivitz plateaus in his NFL improvement and limits his market where the 49ers may be able to retain him at an affordable rate,” Madson added.
“If his ascension continues, on the other hand, McKivitz could be in for a sizable raise that annually far exceeds his career earnings of just over $9 million. If he does improve at that rate, it will put San Francisco’s offensive line in a very good spot in 2025. It may also put them in the market for a new, less expensive right tackle next offseason.”
In 2025, McKivitz is set to make a base salary of $3.2 million. Other than Trent Williams, who has the team’s largest cap hit with over $21 million, the Niners don’t have any O-linemen on long-term deals. McKivitz should change that.
McKivitz Has Shown Steady Growth Over 5 Years With 49ers
Selected by the 49ers in the fifth round (153rd overall) in the 2020 NFL Draft, McKivitz earned his first start later that season at right guard in a late-November game versus the Rams, playing every offensive snap (72) in a close win.
Over five seasons (2020‑24), he’s appeared in 62 games, starting 39. Between 2023 and 2024, he started all 34 regular season games, anchoring the right tackle spot. Throughout his career, he’s primarily been utilized at RT, though his early work at guard exhibited his positional versatility.
According to Pro Football Focus, in 2024 he logged 1,062 offensive snaps, all at right tackle . His snap distribution in 2024 positioned him 17th among tackles in snap count and around the middle tier in pass- and run-blocking grades (pass-blocking grade 72.8, run-blocking grade 68.6) He’s also taken snaps at right guard and left tackle over the years.
Overall, McKivitz has developed from a mid-round rookie into a dependable starter at tackle. His versatility, snap totals, and consistent play have earned him the team’s trust, likely cementing his spot as San Francisco’s starting right tackle.
“I think our system’s a lot different than every system out there,” McKivitz told the East Bay Times in 2024. “The way we come off the ball, create separation and control the line of scrimmage is how we do it. As long as I know how well I play and so does … the whole group, that’s my thing.”
Again, he’ll need to stay healthy, but expect McKivitz to be looking to cash next offseason.
