9-1-1 Foreshadowed Bobby’s Replacement 6 Years Ago

9-1-1 season 9 will include a new captain for the 118, but Bobby’s replacement already had a failed first run years ago. The death of Peter Krause’s Bobby Nash rocked the world of 9-1-1, with the end of season 8 solely dedicated to his send-off. The loss was so painful, there are still theories that Bobby is alive in 9-1-1.

9-1-1 Season 8 Finale Repeats A Divisive Trick That Season 9 Needs To Retire

While 9-1-1 season 9 can’t bring back Bobby, the first-responder drama has already lined up his replacement: Howard “Chimney” Han (Kenneth Choi). Choi’s character has been a cast mainstay since 2018, and the 9-1-1 season 8 finale all but confirmed Captain Han is imminent. Unfortunately, Chimney revealed his captain persona in season 2— and it leaves much to be desired.

Chimney Was A Horrible Interim Captain In 9-1-1 Season 2

Bobby's Suspension Proved Chimney Wasn't Ready To Lead

After Bobby was suspended for failing to disclose his culpability in his family’s fiery death, Chimney debuted as Interim Captain Han in 9-1-1 season 2, episode 17 (“Careful What You Wish For”). Immediately, the members of LAFD station 118 hated Captain Chimney, who abandoned his friendly disposition in favor of meticulous cleaning, condescending speeches, and an off-putting sense of bravado.

For all intents and purposes, Bobby was still the 118’s “real” captain. Chimney called him for advice, other firefighters visited him to vent, and his presence loomed overhead despite his suspension. Once Bobby took down one of 9-1-1’s most memorable villains in the season 2 finale, he was quickly reinstated, and Chimney happily surrendered his captaincy.

Chimney’s Mistakes Were A Reflection Of His Character At The Time

Interim Captain Han Lacked Life Experience

Chimney’s time as interim captain wasn’t necessarily a fair measure of his capabilities, however. By his own admission, Chimney wasn’t prepared for the true responsibility of being captain. Though he accepted the interim position, Chimney hadn’t thought through the serious duty that came with the title. Yet, even if he had, season 2 Chimney was a very different man.

In addition to trauma, Chimney gained maturity...

Chimney’s first leadership experience came long before the character’s most pivotal milestones, including his marriage to Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and the birth of his children. Alongside personal developments like reconciling with his father, Chimney survived some of 9-1-1’s worst near-death experiences and has been made stronger by his hardships. In addition to trauma, Chimney gained maturity over the years.

Has Chimney Changed Enough To Really Be Bobby’s Successor In 9-1-1 Season 9?

He Now Has The Chance To Learn From His Mistakes

While it’s no secret that Bobby can’t truly be replaced in 9-1-1, someone has to step up as the 118’s next captain. Chimney may have made a terrible first impression in season 2, but time has given him perspective, and Bobby’s death only further challenged Chimney to grow.

Just like the fallen captain told him directly in “Careful What You Wish For,” Chimney can’t be Bobby, nor should he try to be. Instead, Captain Han should embrace what makes him unique and simply focus on doing the best he can to lead station 118. Hopefully, 9-1-1 season 9 will prove to be a successful second try.
