9-1-1 Season 9: Confirmation & Everything We Know

The bombastic police procedural 9-1-1 has become a TV institution in its nearly decade-long run on the air, and now it has scored a season 9 renewal. Created for TV by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, 9-1-1 follows the lives and work of first responders in Los Angeles who are tasked with tackling some of the biggest emergencies that the City of Angels can throw at them. Mixing the usual case-of-the-week format from procedurals with Ryan Murphy's signature over-the-top style, 9-1-1 is both familiar and fresh in the oversaturated world of cop shows.

Despite being a consistent success, 9-1-1's time on the air has been anything but smooth, and it was canceled by its original network (Fox) after season 6. However, ABC saved the day, and quickly renewed the first responder procedural for seasons 7 and 8. Not missing a beat, 9-1-1 has continued to deliver the thrills and chills on its new network, and the switch seemed to breathe new life into the long-running series. This freshness made the chances of 9-1-1 season 9 seem all the more plausible, and ABC wasted little time when ordering more episodes.

9-1-1's next outing will consist of 18 episodes.

The future of the procedural didn't seem to be in much jeopardy going into 2025, and the latest news confirms that ABC has renewed 9-1-1 season 9. The order comes along with the renewal of four other programs (Grey's AnatomyThe RookieWill Trent, and Shifting Gears), and shows that 9-1-1 serves an important role in the network's fall slate. Little is currently known about the upcoming ninth season, but it has been confirmed that 9-1-1's next outing will consist of 18 episodes.

With the upcoming spinoff 9-1-1: Nashville coming soon, it seemed unlikely that the flagship series would be axed after season 8. Therefore, it came as no surprise when ABC renewed 9-1-1 season 9 in April 2025. The procedural's stint on ABC has been a triumphant one, and there's no reason to think that the series will be ending anytime soon. With the franchise rising from the ashes after Lone Star's cancelation, the future of 9-1-1 seems secure for quite some time.

9-1-1 season 8 debuted on September 26, 2024.

The announcement of 9-1-1 season 9 didn't come with many details, and it's unclear exactly when the next season will begin shooting. However, work on the next set of episodes will likely begin soon, especially if ABC wants to air season 9 in the fall. The procedural has worked well as one of ABC's main attractions during fall, and it's highly unlikely that it will be moved to the early months of 2026.

Who Will Return For Season 9?

Shows like 9-1-1 utilize a strong ensemble of characters from season to season, and though changes are common, it is the continuity that keeps viewers returning year after year. With that in mind, the cast of 9-1-1 season 9 will probably feature a slew of returning faces from previous years, led by Angela Bassett's Athena Grant, who has anchored the show since episode one. Though shocking deaths and departures could happen throughout season 8, Bassett will likely be joined by Peter Krause as Robert "Bobby" Nash (her onscreen husband), and stalwarts like Kenneth Choi as Howard "Chimney" Han.

There wasn't much turnover between seasons 7 and 8, and that trend could continue as the series stretches toward the decade mark. Other expected returns include Oliver Stark as Evan "Buck" Buckley, and he'll certainly be joined by the likes of Aisha Hinds as Henrietta "Hen" Wilson, and Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie Buckley. A robust series of guest stars is always a possibility as well, and character returns happen quite frequently also.

the only thing that can be confirmed about the potential plot of 9-1-1 season 9 is that it will kick off with a bang.

Though most cop shows follow a similar structure, 9-1-1 is unique because it adds in Ryan Murphy's signature flare for the dramatic. With that said, the only thing that can be confirmed about the potential plot of 9-1-1 season 9 is that it will kick off with a bang. From season 7's cruise ship disaster to season 8's "bee-nado", the show is never afraid to go for the most bombastic emergency to kick off the season. As season 8 progresses, the story will likely inform what happens in season 9, but for now, nothing is certain about what happens next.
