‘9-1-1’ Star, 46, Is Pushing For a Crossover With an Iconic Slasher Franchise

Jennifer Love Hewitt has a brilliant idea, and we’re hoping the 9-1-1 creative team listens to it. On the heels of opening weekend for Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, which sees Hewitt reprise the role of Julie James after nearly three decades since originating it, the actress grabbed a seat opposite Tommy DiDario on his I’ve Never Said This Before podcast. It was there that she came up with and spitballed her plans for a one-of-a-kind event that would see 9-1-1 pay homage to the iconic slasher franchise.

During the pair’s chat, the star of the beloved ABC procedural was musing about what might happen to her character — 911 dispatcher Maddie Han — in upcoming episodes when she struck gold with a killer idea:

“What if I get a call at the 911 call center from a girl being chased by a fisherman? [Winks] Wouldn’t it be fun? It would be playful and it would be fun — like in a Halloween episode. I’m putting it out there! I think that would be really good, like, ‘911, what’s your emergency?’ ‘I’m being chased by a guy with a hook!’ ‘Really? We’ve all seen that movie.’ Wouldn’t that be brilliant?”

Yes. It would be absolutely brilliant and wonderfully meta. You know, like that episode of Boy Meets World when she played Jennifer Love Fefferman in a one-off episode of the show’s fifth season that paid homage to the slashers of the day, like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream. Give the fans what they want, 9-1-1 and make the fisherman storyline a thing!

Julie James Returns

The perfect mix of nostalgia and freshness, I Know What You Did Last Summer hooked audiences last weekend when it sliced and diced its way into cinemas. Along with Freddie Prinze Jr., Hewitt was part of the old guard, reprising her role as Julie James — the final girl from the first two films. This time around, a new group of young friends (Madelyn ClineChase Sui WondersJonah Hauer-KingTyriq WithersSarah Pidgeon) find themselves being hunted by a mysterious killer in a rain slicker. Turning to Hewitt’s Julie and Prinze Jr.’s Ray for help, the newbies do their best to outrun and outsmart the psychopathic, hook-wielding murderer before it’s too late.

You can check out part of Hewitt’s interview with DiDario in the clip above. I Know What You Did Last Summer is now playing in theaters.
