9-1-1 Star Talks Filming Season 9 Without Peter Krause's Bobby Nash: 'Nothing Is the Same'

9-1-1 Season 9 has begun production, but there's a tinge of sadness to it, because one actor won't be coming back.

"It's not the same," she said as she arrived at the LA premiere of I Know What You Did Last Summer. "Nothing is the same. But I do think that, you know, when you're telling a story about first responders, unfortunately, those are the things that happen. [Krause] was the person that mattered to everyone in the cast the most. He was our hero. And he always will be."

Bobby Nash's death was a heroic sacrifice to save another member of the team. When the crew became trapped in a lab with a deadly virus, Chimney (Kenneth Choi) contracted it. When a cure came, Bobby gave it to Chimney without revealing that he also had the virus, and once his team had gotten to safety he succumbed to the disease. His wife Athena (Angela Bassett) could only watch in horror through a plastic curtain, and later all the team, Hewitt's Maddie included, grieved in their separate ways.

Hewitt went on to describe 9-1-1 as her "favorite show", one that she was happy to go back to. "I miss my people. I oddly miss crying every day, all day long. So I'm excited to go do that again and see what emergencies we have," she said.

Fans Were Appalled By the Death

After his character was killed off, Peter Krause released a statement to the Hollywood Reporter explaining why it was done. "I’ve heard that many fans are upset by this loss, and they have a right to be. It is a loss," he began. "That said, it was more than a bold creative choice on a bold show. Bobby Nash was written in sacrifice, and he was built for this. First responders risk their lives on the job so that others can see another day. His story arc honors them."

Krause shouted out all the cast in his statement, including Jennifer Love Hewitt and his onscreen wife Angela Bassett. "This has been one wild adventure. I thank you all, with all my heart," he said. But there was no denying it was hard on the other cast members. Bassett spoke to People about it a few weeks after the fact.

“I'm in mourning,” she said to the outlet. “I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. It wasn't my choice. I don't know.” She had a note of hope for fans, however. “Keep hope alive. Maybe [Bobby will] return in my dreams, you know, my memories.”
