Oliver Stark and Ryan Guzman Revisit Their Most Powerful Buck and Eddie Moments on 9-1-1
After eight emotional seasons, 9-1-1 stars Oliver Stark and Ryan Guzman are reflecting on the scenes that helped make their characters — Evan “Buck” Buckley and Eddie Diaz — one of the show’s most beloved pairings. Speaking with Us Weekly, the duo opened up about the iconic Buddie moments that fans can’t stop rewatching, as well as the behind-the-scenes memories that made them unforgettable.
One of the most dramatic moments came when Eddie was shot in the line of duty. While the scene was tense onscreen, Stark revealed a hilarious behind-the-scenes challenge: repeatedly having to throw Guzman — who was eating chocolate cake between every take — over his shoulder to get him into the fire truck. “I was like, ‘Why are you making yourself heavier for me?!’” Stark laughed, adding that the real difficulty was reacting in real time to fake blood being sprayed on his face during the take. Despite the chaos, the final cut was perfect.
Guzman added that he drew inspiration from his cousin, a war veteran, to ground the realism of the moment and stay emotionally present.
One of the most beloved Buddie scenes, according to Stark, was from Season 3, where Buck and Eddie's conversation starts off tense and almost romantic — only to cut to them playing video games with Eddie’s son, Christopher. “There was so much tension in the air, like something intense was about to happen — and then we just smash-cut to video games,” Stark explained. “That’s what makes 9-1-1 so great — it balances intensity and humor without ever taking itself too seriously.”
Stark highlighted Buck’s powerful scene yelling at his parents as one of the most cathartic moments of the series. It built up to the emotional “Buck Begins” episode, where viewers learned that Buck was born to be a donor for his sick brother. “That line about walking through fire every day really hit me,” Stark recalled. He praised his co-stars Dee Wallace and Greg Harrison for helping him reach such a raw emotional place on screen.
Guzman pointed to this scene as one of the most draining and emotional days on set. “I was crying during every take — mine and Oliver’s. By the end of it, my eyes were so puffy,” he said. Despite the intensity, he described it as “cathartic,” suggesting it helped him release emotions he’d been carrying personally.
While fans loved seeing Buck’s playful jealousy play out during a basketball scene by the ocean, Stark joked that the day wasn’t quite as fun as it looked. “I was out of breath within ten minutes,” he said, laughing. He expected a casual game but instead found himself rehearsing “a choreographed dance of passes and moves.” Still, the change of pace from firehouse scenes made it one of his favorite days of filming.
Most recently, the duo tackled a powerful fight scene filled with grief and frustration. As Eddie struggles with guilt over not being present during a tragic loss, and Buck processes the trauma of being there, their clash erupts in the kitchen. What made the moment more intense? Stark had no idea Guzman was going to lunge at him. “But we’ve built this level of trust, so when it happened, I just rolled with it,” he said.
Guzman confirmed that they only lightly rehearsed the scene beforehand. “Our show works like this: the best idea in the room wins,” he said. “I wanted to try elevating it. The director asked if I wanted to punch him, and I was like, ‘Let’s play with that.’” The result was one of the most emotional and raw scenes the pair has shared.
From tears to laughter (and chocolate cake), Oliver Stark and Ryan Guzman’s reflections prove that what makes Buddie so compelling isn’t just the writing — it’s the trust, chemistry, and heart they bring to every scene.
