The Yankees dropped Game 2 of the highly-awaited Subway Series to their crosstown rival Mets, with a Francisco Lindor ninth-inning sacrifice fly being the difference maker in the 3-2 equalizer.
The Mets droped the first game by a score of 6-2, but got the momentum back with Griffin Canning on the mound.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone has often been known in Yankee circles for his choice use of words after losses, with his quote in 2024 of "It's right in front of us" becoming somewhat of an inside joke.
On Saturday, Boone delivered another classic.
"It was a really great baseball game. It really was," Boone said shortly after the Yankees' loss on Saturday.
Of course, it seems rather tone deaf for the manager to deliver a fully positive remark after his team's loss. There's identifying bright spots within a loss, and there's that.
Yankee fans came in and showed their dissatisfaction with Boonie's quote.
One X user wrote: "There's no way he actually said this....we lost. Who cares if it's a good game?"
Another wrote: "I mean… it wasn’t a great baseball game if they lost and your the manager of the Yankees."
The main controversy around Boone's managing was that Boone let former top prospect Jorbit Vivas, who has struggled at the plate, swing away with two runners on and no outs in the fifth inning, rather than bunting.
If Vivas were to have laid down a successful bunt, many fans contend the optics of the game would've been different.
One fan referenced this situation: "Did anyone ask Boone why he didn’t sacrifice Vivas with two on and nobody out? The decision to not bunt cost the Yankees a run."
The Yankees will look to take the series Sunday night with ace Max Fried on the bump.
