Adam Engstrom is in the midst of a fine season with Laval. I wrote about him a few months ago Now it’s time for an update. The 6’2” defenseman plays at pace and he has very good stick and puck control. He gets used in 3-on-3 overtime because he can create offense with that extra space on the ice.
He has four goals and 16 assists in 41 games. At 21, he’s right on schedule and he should get around 35 points this season. That’s a really good number for a rookie and next year he could be in a position to get a call-up to see where he’s at.
The rearguard has just 24 PIMS in 45 games. Considering he averages 20 minutes a night, it shows that he has excellent discipline, and that will help him when he’s ready to take the next step.
As far as special teams go; he averages 2:22 on the power play and 1:07 on the penalty kill according to InStat. These are solid numbers. It shows just how important he is to the team.
The other statistic that’s impressive is the fact that he is winning 62% of his puck battles. That’s really good for any player but for a rookie it’s impressive.
One last number that stands out is the fact that he has 12% defensive zone starts. I would want to see this number increase by next season because that helps to show that he’s starting to round out his game.
