The Minnesota Vikings have a storied history on the defensive line, and edge rusher Jared Allen is the latest to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame, as he gets inducted this weekend in Canton, Ohio.
Vikings fans know Allen best as the star edge rusher who rocked the mullet for the majority of his career. What many don't remember from the 2011 season is how close Allen was to setting the all-time single season sack record. According to Allen, he believes that it should retroactively be made his.
"The reality is, I hold the 23 sack record. It's 23 not TJ Watt 22 and a half at 17 games, and not Michael Strahan. It's facts for facts. It's on film. I sacked Aaron Rodgers. They took it from me on Wednesday [after facing the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football]. Called it a team sack. But if you go back to that Monday night football game, Aaron Rodgers got the ball, went to step up in the pocket, drops the ball, picks it back up, he can still throw the ball. I chase it down, tackle set, give it to me. That's two sacks for the game. Wednesday, they take it back, called it a muff and gave it a team sack. Well, I'm part of the team. I'm the team. I'm the one that physically tackled them, so I should lose the hat to that, right? But yeah, if you go back and look, I physically sacked Aaron Rodgers for my 23rd was in my 23rd sack. I had 23 quarterbacks on the ground that year."
When you watch the full above clip, you can see Allen tackle Rodgers with nobody else coming close to getting to him. Taking away that sack doesn't make a ton of sense, and Rodgers even made a cameo
"Hey Jared, it's Aaron Rodgers. You are the all time single season sack leader. I don't care what the numbers say, because that phantom bull**** sack they took away from you would give youthe record. So, in my book, and probably in most Vikings fan books, you're the all time, single season sack leader, my friend."
This isn't something that the league can retroactively fix years down the line, but he should be recognized as the spiritual leader.
