Alex Bregman, one of the premier free agents of the offseason, signed a 4-year deal with the Boston Red Sox in February.
While the Red Sox were able to get the deal done, the Detroit Tigers were very active in trying to sign the former two-time World Series Champion. Recently, Bregman stated that he thought he was joining the Tigers until roughly 30 minutes before signing with Boston.
B/R's Tim Kelly wrote an article labeling the biggest regret each MLB team had from the offseason, and not signing Bregman was the regret for the Tigers.
The Tigers are entering 2025 coming off their best season in a decade. Detroit made the playoffs for the first time since 2014, and were able to knock off the Houston Astros in the Wild Card round before being eliminated. Their star pitcher, Tarik Skubal, dominated en route to winning the AL Cy Young award.
Signing Bregman would have ushered in Detroit solidifying themselves as true championship contenders. Bregman could have been the sought-after veteran for young players such as Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson.
With the Tigers having a very strong pitching rotation including players such as Skubal and Jack Flaherty, they are hoping to win their first AL Central crown since 2011. If they had signed Alex Bregman, their quest would be a lot easier.
