As stated many times, if the Boston Red Sox want to be the team they aspire to be over the next decade, it'll have to be because of players like Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer. Mayer and Anthony are two of the top prospects in Major League Baseball, with many considering Anthony the best in the game.
However, just like every other player who makes their debut, it isn't an easy task to ask a player to come up and swing the bat at the highest level when they're as young as somebody like Anthony.
There will be growing pains, and that's fine, as long as the Red Sox fully go into a youth movement and allow them to struggle.
However, according to reports, skipper Alex Cora doesn't expect to play Anthony or Mayer against left-handed pitchers. This is a questionable decision, and one that the front office needs to address.
“I don’t know, maybe (the rookies will play) Friday, maybe Saturday, maybe Sunday,” Cora said, per NESN. “Let’s wait until we see the lefty, and then when you seen the lineup you guys can ask me.
“We have some good righties here. If we don’t play Romy (González), if we don’t play (Rob Refsnyder), is that good for the team? I get the whole conversation. I get that (the rookies) are great hitters, they’re great players, but those two guys are really good at what they do. We’re trying to win as many games as possible.”
There's only one way for a player to get better against left-handed pitching. For Mayer and Anthony, that has to come at the expense of getting at-bats in the big leagues. Even if they go 0-30, it's better than them sitting on the bench.
