The Denver Broncos have confirmed that veteran linebacker Alex Singleton sustained a broken thumb during a recent training camp practice.
The injury occurred during Tuesday’s padded session while Singleton was involved in a run-stopping drill. Trainers immediately evaluated the linebacker on the field before escorting him to the medical tent for further testing.
Following practice, head coach Sean Payton told reporters that Singleton had fractured his thumb, but added that the team remains optimistic about his recovery timeline.
“Alex is one of our toughest guys,” Payton said. “He’ll be evaluated further, but we’re hopeful he won’t miss too much time.”
Singleton is expected to undergo additional scans this week to determine whether surgery is necessary. If no operation is required, he may be able to return with a protective brace before the end of training camp.
The 30-year-old linebacker led the Broncos in tackles last season and has been a consistent presence in the middle of the defense. His absence, however brief, could open opportunities for depth players like Jonas Griffith and Justin Strnad to take expanded reps.
Singleton’s leadership both on and off the field has been praised by teammates, and the Broncos are hopeful he’ll be back in the lineup well before Week 1 of the regular season.
