An Underrated Symbiote Hero Has a New Mission – and It Could Change Everything for Marvel’s Monsters

One of the msot underrated symbiote superheroes is making a huge difference for the monsters of the Marvel Universe in the wake of Venom War.

Venom War: Deadpool #3 picks up in the middle of the sprawling battle between the Zombiote horde that has washed over New York City and the denizens of the Monster Metropolis, whose best hope for survival, the symbiotic Poison, was quick to turn on his supposed allies. Fortunately, the likes of Princess Deadpool and Andi Benton, aka Silence, are still capable of saving the day in the face of such overwhelming odds. Better yet, once the dust has settled, Silence is given the opportunity to continue protecting those who have been pushed to the fringes as Monster Metropolis' official liaison with the rest of the world.

Marvel's Monster Metropolis, an expansive underground setting deep beneath the streets of Manhattan, has been a key if rarely seen Marvel Comics locale since its debut in 2009's Punisher #12 by Rick Remender and Tony Moore. As the home to the likes of the Manphibian, Morbius the Living Vampire, and N'Kantu the Living Mummy, the Monster Metropolis is an obvious refuge for the monsters of the Marvel Universe who would otherwise be hunted merely for their existence as it stands. Thanks to the denizens of the Monster Metropolis, Frank Castle was able to be reborn as the infamous Frankencastle, yet that is far from the only memorable storyline that the the former have played a role in such a memorable storyline.

Andi Benton has long been a fan-favorite character, with her early appearances and proximity to Flash Thompson putting her in a prime position to become a hero of her own. Soon enough, Andi was caught in the middle of an attack by the villainous Jack O'Lantern, during which Flash gave Andi a portion of his Venom symbiote in order to keep her safe. Instead of simply protecting Andi temporarily, this offshoot of the Venom symbiote bonded to her permanently, ultimately taking shape as the Mania symbiote in the pages of 2013's Venom #38 by Cullen Bunn and Kim Jacinto.

In the years since, Andi has been the host to multiple other symbiotes, including the iconic Scream symbiote born as a part of the Life Foundation's original offshoots of Venom. On top of her usual symbiote powers, Andi's Scream was also immune to one of its kind's biggest weaknesses - fire - courtesy of Andi's ability to harness and command literal Hellfire. After the Scream symbiote was killed, Dr. Steven of Alchemax took it upon himself to merge its remains with a sample of Flash Thompson's Anti-Venom symbiote, giving rise to the overtly over-powers Silence symbiote that soon found a familiar host in Andi all over again.
