Anonymous former NFL head coach has abnormal confidence in Joe Burrow's ability to carry the Bengals

Joe Burrow did all he could to take the Cincinnati Bengals back to the playoffs last year. He would've been a serious MVP candidate had he managed to overcome the deficiencies around him.

That kind of season has an impact on the NFL world.

Burrow nearly carried the Bengals to the postseason despite Cincinnati's defense failing so often during the middle of the year. There's at least one person who thinks he can get the team back to January football regardless of what happens when he's on the sidelines.

Former NFL head coach has the upmost confidence in Joe Burrow

Joe Burrow must request a trade in 2025 offseason to preserve his NFL career

A former NFL head coach, who chose to remain anonymous, told Sports Illustrated's John Pluym he believes Burrow can elevate the Bengals to the promise land no matter what Cincinnati's defense looks like.

“I believe Joe can get Cincinnati over the hump regardless of what’s going on on the defensive side. I got a lot of confidence in him. I would not count the Bengals out. If they pick up where they left off, look out. ” — anonymous former head coach

Football is the ultimate team game. Quarterback may be the most vital position on the field, but there's a reason why the Super Bowl is normally won by good teams with good QBs instead of average teams with elite QBs.

Burrow was statistically the most productive passer in the game last year and could only win nine games. There wasn't much more he could've done to change the season's end result. That speaks to how great he truly is, but his ability to carry those around him is only so great.

If the Bengals put together another season with their defense ranking 27th in EPA/play allowed, 30th in success rate allowed, and 26th in points allowed, it probably won't matter if Burrow successfully matches his 2024 campaign. Cincinnati would still unlikely to make the postseason or go far if a Wild Card berth were secured.

But that's how Burrow makes people feel. When he's in the game, the Bengals always believe they can win. It's now starting to leak into other corners of the NFL.
