The Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves up 3–1 in their first-round series of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. For most NHL fan bases, this is a comfortable position to be in. But considering this is the Leafs, there is a rightful level of anxiousness.
But Leafs fans can be confident in their goaltending. Anthony Stolarz was acquired by the Maple Leafs in free agency in 2024 after winning a Cup with the Florida Panthers. Stolarz has become arguably the biggest piece of their success so far this season, and is a steady and calming presence in net.
Steady in net
When Stolarz initially joined the Maple Leafs, he was expected to be a secondary option. Initially, he was expected to be playing behind Joseph Woll, but an injury early in the season took Woll out and thrust Stolarz into the spotlight. He showed up in the moment, putting up consistent performances almost every night that solidified him as the team’s preferred option.
During this regular season, Stolarz put together great numbers, including a .926 save percentage and a 2.14 goals-against average, ranking amongst the best in the league. His ability to maintain composure in front of a team that allows a lot of shots is impressive, and his 6’7″ height makes him a solid net front presence.
Showing up in the playoffs
In the first three games of the series, Stolarz showcased his skill and fought back. In Game 1, despite a crease collision with Senators forward Ridley Greig, Stolarz looked good and remained on his game, stopping 28 of 30 shots in a 6–2 victory. His decisive gameplay helped set the tone for the rest of the series.
Game 2 was much closer, but Stolarz stood strong, making key saves throughout the game. His performance helped the Leafs squeak out a close 3–2 overtime win, giving them a commanding 2–0 series lead, and with game three ending similarly, there is no doubt who has taken the top job in net in this series.
With the Senators edging out a 4–3 overtime victory in Game 4, Stolarz’s play early in this series had already put Toronto in a strong position to win. He gives the team a chance to win every night, regardless of how tight the game has been.
Leadership and mental toughness
Beyond just his net-front skills, Stolarz has become a leader on his team. His fiery attitude and his will to fight for his crease have boosted confidence in his teammates. Coach Berube has praised Stolarz for his competitiveness, noting how important he has been for this team defensively.
Stolarz’s experience, including his trip to the Stanley Cup Finals, has also been very influential. He has remained calm under pressure and has been able to play at a high level in stressful situations, which have been crucial for the Leafs as they hope to advance further in the playoffs.
With the Leafs heading into Game 5 leading the series 3–1, Stolarz’s role remains pivotal. The focus will be on maintaining discipline defensively and giving Stolarz the best chance to make a key save. If Stolarz continues to perform the way he has, Toronto will still be the heavy favourite to take this series win.
Anthony Stolarz’s stellar goaltending has been a key factor in the Leafs being up 3–1 in this series over the Senators. His consistent saves, fight, and ability to perform under pressure have made him an integral part of this team. As the playoffs continue, the Leafs will rise and fall by the play of their star goalie, Anthony Stolarz.
