The Yankees’ seventh run in just two innings against the Red Sox might have come with a price.
Anthony Volpe was removed from Friday’s series opener in The Bronx before the start of the fourth inning after getting drilled in the left elbow in the second inning.
Volpe was sent for X-rays and a CT scan, the Yankees said, and results were not immediately known.
With the bases loaded in the second, Volpe was plunked by an 88.8 mph changeup from Walker Buehler and appeared to be in significant pain.
After the pitch hit him, Volpe retreated nearly to the opposing dugout as if attempting to run off the pain, then tried making his way to first base but hunched over a few steps past the plate.
A Yankees trainer and manager, Aaron Boone checked on Volpe, who for the moment remained in the game after his HBP gave the club a 7-0 lead.
A trainer and manager Aaron Boone, left, check on Anthony Volpe after Volpe was hit by a pitch during the second inning of a baseball game against the Boston Red Sox, Friday, June 6, 2025, in New York.
But he only played one more frame defensively before Oswald Peraza subbed in at shortstop for the top of the fourth.
That put a damper on a strong start from the Yankees — which included a two-run homer from Volpe in the first inning.
