The third annual Detroit Red Wings Alumni game is set for September 13 at the Berry Events Center in Marquette.
The event provides an opportunity for local hockey players to skate alongside former Red Wings legends and other players.
The Red Wings' alumni holds events at different areas throughout the year. This is the third event involving the United Way of Marquette County.
Vladimir Konstantinov, whose career ended in a limousine crash six days after the Red Wings won the 1997 Stanley Cup, dropped the ceremonial first puck at an event in April. The Wings alumni played a team that represented The Well Church in Brighton at 140 Ice Den in Howell. Konstantinov has dropped the first puck at the Howell event for the past four years.
Applications are now open for interested players to join Team Yoopers United in the exhibition matchup. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and apply by 4 p.m. CT on Thursday, June 12.
If interested, click this link to fill out an online application. If you prefer to fill a paper application, those are also available at the United Way of Marquette County office, located at 1414 W. Fair Ave., Suite 26.
Selected players will be notified on June 18
The alumni roster has not been released for this event. However, in the past, these events have attracted the likes of Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, Kris Draper, Kirk Maltby, Ty Conklin, Tomas Holmstrom, Sergei Fedorov, Manny Legace, Kevin Hodson, Larry Murphy, Chris Chelios, Jiri Fischer, Paul Coffey, Darren McCarty, and Mathieu Dandenault.
And who knows, maybe one lucky fan will have the blessing or the curse of dropping the gloves of McCarty. If they can survive without having some severe abrasions or cuts, that should be considered a victory for that individual.
Good luck to all who apply.
