Kirk Cousins’ 2024 season with the Atlanta Falcons was up and down, showing moments of strong play but also key mistakes. Despite trade rumors and being benched late in the season, he remains on the roster — a surprise to many fans. Cousins, who signed a four-year, $180 million deal, threw for 3,508 yards with 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.
He led the Falcons to a 6-8 record as a starter before rookie Michael Penix Jr. took over in Week 16. A rough five-game stretch in which Cousins threw nine interceptions and only one touchdown raised questions about his future. While he’s still on the team heading into 2025, it’s not clear if he will stay. With a $40 million cap hit and a no-trade clause, his situation has caught attention as the Falcons shift their focus to Penix.
Speaking Tuesday on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio with Adam Schein, Fontenot said the team is staying patient with Cousins’ situation — and open to all possibilities.
“We have to be patient there and we’re always open, not just talking about Kirk, but really anybody on our roster,” Fontenot said. “I’ve probably already talked to six or seven GMs since the draft ended. They’re talking about their roster, we’re talking about our roster, because the draft shifts some things in terms of needs and surplus.”
Fontenot said the Falcons will stay aggressive if the right opportunity comes up.
“If something comes to us with Kirk or any other player that makes sense and it’s going to help this team, then we’re going to be aggressive and we’re going to do it,” he said. “But if it’s not going to ultimately help this team, we always have to ask that question: Is it the best for the Atlanta Falcons? And if it is, we’re going to be willing to do it.”
For now, Cousins remains on the roster as the Falcons head into a new era with Penix. Whether that changes before the season starts is still unknown, but Fontenot made it clear the team is weighing all options to do what’s best for the future of the franchise.
