The Atlanta Falcons have re-signed cornerback Mike Hughes to a new three-year deal.
The deal is worth $18 million and is guaranteed $9.6 million. FOX Sports NFL Insider Jordan Schultz first reported the news earlier on Tuesday. The Falcons are looking for Hughes to contribute again as a starter heading into the 2025 season.
The Minnesota Vikings selected Hughes in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Hughes is considered a bit undersized at the position, which may be why he has played for four teams in his NFL tenure.
Hughes has 265 tackles, 7 forced fumbles, and 3 interceptions in 87 career games, but he has yet to record a sack. During the 2024 season with Atlanta, Hughes allowed 46 catches for 483 yards and 3 touchdowns on 66 targets. This was his first season working only the outside of the field, which is what he is used to.
The Falcons felt their defense was better when Hughes was on the field. Coming over from his one-year stop in Kansas City with the Chiefs, Hughes ventured to Atlanta and was reunited with assistant head coach/defense Jerry Gray, the Vikings' defensive backs coach when Minnesota selected Hughes in 2018.
Hughes and Gray have been together for the past two years. After this deal becomes official, the two will continue their relationship in Atlanta, attempting to build upon a secondary that was a bit stale for most of last year's season.
More moves are expected within the next few weeks as teams try to navigate the official start of the NFL's league year, which starts at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
