Trey Augustine stepped in for the injured Alex Lyon early in the second period Saturday and helped preserve an easy 6-1 victory for the United States over Germany at the World Championship in Ostrava, Czechia.
Lyon, the Detroit Red Wings’ main goaltender for most of the season, stopped all 14 shots he faced before leaving the game at 3:27 of the second period. He cut his left (catching) hand when an opponent stepping on him during a scramble at the net. Augustine, the 41st overall pick in 2023 by the Red Wings, stopped 11-of-12 shots over the final 36:33 in his first-ever appearance in this tournament. He’s coming off his freshman season at Michigan State.
There was no immediate update on the severity of Lyon’s injury. Former Red Wing Alex Nedeljkovic is the other goalie for the U.S. He played for Pittsburgh this season.
Six different players scored goals for the U.S., which rebounded from Friday’s opening 5-2 loss to Sweden.
“I thought we played with a strong competitive level tonight,” USA coach John Hynes said. “And we played a more cohesive game with and without the puck.”
Michael Kesselring and Johnny Gaudreau each had a goal and an assist. Brady Tkachuk, named player of the game, Luke Hughes, Trevor Zegras and Michael Eyssimont also scored goals. Cole Caufield and Shane Pinto contributed two assists each.
Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry logged 12:25 (no shots, even rating).
