Bachelorette star Katie Thurston is fighting for her life after finding out she has breast cancer. She is on medication and shared the next steps in the battle.
Katie Thurston is living one of her worst nightmares. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in February even though she’s only 34. To make matters more difficult, she was initially misdiagnosed.
The first tests showed she was in Stage 3 and that the cancer was HER-positive, which means it was aggressive and chemotherapy was the best course of treatment. She had a chest port implanted and was literally on her way to the first chemo treatment. But her second team of doctors told her to hold off until they could run tests to verify the diagnosis.
Katie Thurston had recently moved from California and New York to be with her then-fiance, Jeff Arcuri. They got married in March after the scary diagnosis.
It’s a good thing the doctors told her not to start chemo yet. The second tests showed that Katie Thurston was actually Stage 4, but the cancer was HER-negative, which is less aggressive.
Her new team of doctors advised that chemotherapy wasn’t necessary yet and they wanted to treat the cancer with oral medication. Katie Thurston started the treatment last month. The side effects of chemotherapy are obviously worse, but she revealed that the side effects from her regimen aren’t that great, either.
In a post to her Instagram Story, she showed how the chest port wound is healing. She also pointed out the visible scarring from the lumpectomy.
Despite the difficult diagnosis, Katie Thurston is doing her best to put on a brave face. She regularly shares updates on the Boobie Broadcast Instagram channel she created. In her latest update, she revealed that she spoke to her radiation oncologist. The doctor recommended surgery within the next six to twelve months to remove the tumor.
The Bachelorette star previously shared plans to undergo a full mastectomy and reconstruction. She also revealed that the doctor wants her to start radiation after the surgery.
Cancer – or any illness – is a personal battle. Some people choose to fight quietly but Katie Thurston isn’t one of those people. Instead, she’s fighting as loud as she can.
And her fans love her for it. They flock to the comments on all of Katie’s social media posts to thank her for bringing awareness to breast cancer, especially breast cancer at a young age.
Keep Katie Thurston in your thoughts.
