Well, the Philadelphia Flyers could not get the job done in Elmont, N.Y., on Monday night, as a team comprised of mostly AHL players and prospects fell to the hosting New York Islanders, 4-3.
By all accounts, though, it was a valiant effort. NHL regulars Joel Farabee and Rasmus Ristolainen drove the boat for the Flyers, while bubble players like Emil Andrae, Anthony Richard, and Olle Lycksell all chipped in.
Starting goalie Ivan Fedotov had an uneven night, making 13 saves on 16 shots in only 31:04 of action but revealing a weakness in the process. Fedotov, who has only been with the Flyers for six months, has shown to be susceptible to screens and deflections early in his NHL career despite his size.
On the other hand, Flyers rookie Alexei Kolosov played the second half of Monday’s game, making seven saves on eight shots and looking sharp while doing so. As a shorter goalie (6-foot, to be exact), Kolosov’s bend and athleticism starkly contrasted with Fedotov’s.
The 22-year-old Belarusian also made a number of glove saves, so reflexes won’t be an issue with Kolosov either.
The Flyers are paying a decent amount of money to Fedotov for two more years, and he didn’t play poorly by any means, but you have to wonder how hard a highly motivated Kolosov is going to push for an NHL job. He looked really good against the Islanders’ NHLers.

The talk of the town away from Philadelphia is, of course, the suddenly toxic relationship between the Boston Bruins and their star young goaltender, Jeremy Swayman.
Swayman, 25, remains a restricted free agent as his agent and the Bruins try to hammer away at a long-term contract, though Bruins president Cam Neely claimed publicly on Monday that Swayman has “64 million reasons” to return to the team.
That would imply that Swayman has received a $64 million contract offer, though his agent, Lewis Gross, has denied that in a statement.
In Gross’s statement, he also expressed his frustration that the Bruins would resort to this tactic when Gross had strictly avoided using the media and other methods to artificially negotiate a deal for Swayman.
On that note, the Bruins have already committed to Joonas Korpisalo as their opening night starter, and suddenly, a Swayman trade is looking very much on the table after this latest twist.
