It was announced yesterday that Barclay Goodrow, 31, was placed on waivers by the New York Rangers in an effort to clear his salary. Today, after a trade to acquire Ty Dellandrea from the Dallas Stars, the San Jose Sharks claimed Goodrow.
The undrafted, two-time Stanley Cup Champion started his career in the Bay after spending a few seasons in the OHL. In his first few seasons with the Sharks, he bounced from the NHL to the AHL before finding a permanent seat in the majors in the 2018-19 season.
In February 2020, Goodrow was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Anthony Greco and a 2020 first-round pick, where he would help them win back-to-back championships.
In the summer of 2021, he was traded to the New York Rangers, where he signed his current six-year, $21 million contract. Goodrow had career years in his first two seasons with the Rangers, recording 33 and then 31 points during those seasons, before falling off this past season, finishing with only 12 points and a career-low -13 goal differential. He had a strong playoff performance, eight points in 16 games, finishing at a +4, but the Rangers still decided to part ways with the winger.
San Jose has the space for his contract with a projected cap space of $32 million this summer, and Goodrow’s experience and leadership will help build a foundation for a winning culture with the rebuilding team. Goodrow has never missed the postseason in his NHL career, so being on a team with low expectations will hopefully evolve and rejuvenate his game.
