Warning: SPOILERS for 9-1-1 season 8, episode 9.9-1-1 season 8’s confirmation that Eddie is leaving is devastating, but it ironically bodes well for his long-speculated romance. Ryan Guzman’s Eddie has stood opposite Oliver Stark’s Buck in the 9-1-1 cast since the season 2 premiere, but their close relationship often seems deeper than friendship. Throughout the near-death experiences they’ve had in 9-1-1, Buck and Eddie’s most heartbreaking scenes usually involve each other. After Eddie is shot in 9-1-1 season 4, he even adds Buck to his will to be a legal guardian to his son, Christopher (Gavin McHugh). While allegedly platonic, the two are undeniably bonded for life.
Buck and Eddie’s kinship in 9-1-1 makes Eddie’s departure all the more tragic, with 9-1-1 season 8, episode 9 illustrating how Buck and Eddie are both failing to cope with the knowledge that they won’t be in each other’s lives soon. 9-1-1’s intense disasters usually impact all of LA, but Eddie’s exit from 9-1-1 feels like a disaster in and of itself. Thankfully, there’s a bittersweet silver lining in Eddie’s Texas storyline that points to a happier future for him and Buck.
Buck Rents Out Eddie's House In 9-1-1 Ahead Of The Latter's Move To Texas
After Sabotaging Eddie's Subletter Hunt, Buck Takes It Upon Himself
In 9-1-1 season 8, episode 9, Buck inadvertently ruins Eddie’s chances at attracting a renter to sublet his house while he’s in Texas. In an emotional scene near the end of the episode, Buck admits he’s having more difficulty than expected accepting Eddie’s move. To make up for his meddling, Buck insists on moving into Eddie’s house. Since Eddie spent the entire episode worried he wouldn’t find a subletter in time for his scheduled move, he accepts Buck’s offer with a tearful hug.
Eddie & Christopher's Likely Return Means They'll Have To Live With Buck
At Least Temporarily, But Perhaps Permanently
worry about mending his relationship with Christopher following the events of 9-1-1 season 7’s finale, but it’s unlikely that the ABC procedural would let their strained relationship become irreparable. Eddie taking the leap to move to Texas could even kickstart their reconciliation, but Christopher will probably make his father sweat before he forgives him. By the time Eddie returns home to LA with Christopher in tow, Buck will likely be settled in at his new home. The solution, though obvious, has serious implications for the future of Buck and Eddie’s relationship.
Buck was wrong about where Eddie belongs in 9-1-1 season 8, but Buck living at Eddie’s could be the first step to realizing where they both belong: together. When Eddie and Christopher return to LA, Buck will likely begin looking for new housing, but he’ll have nowhere to stay during the house hunt aside from Eddie’s place. However, living together even temporarily could open new doors for Buck and Eddie’s relationship. There’s a chance 9-1-1 jumps into the deep end and simply has Buck stay with Eddie permanently, adding roommates to their manifold relationship titles.
Eddie & Buck Being Roommates Creates More Opportunities For Them To Be Together
They're Already A Family, But Living Together Would Solidify It
Being in such close proximity could help Buck and Eddie realize their true feelings about each other that may be lying dormant in 9-1-1. The relationship Buck had with Christopher made for many heartwarming moments in 9-1-1 and, prior to Chris moving to Texas, Buck seemed like a second father to him. With all three living under the same roof, Buck, Eddie, and Christopher could realize how well they function as a family unit in 9-1-1. Consequently, Buck and Eddie would realize how well they function as a pair.
Buck and Eddie could also become an office romance in 9-1-1, adding an exciting new element to the 118. Of course, that would also have to wait for Eddie to fully move back to LA, since 9-1-1 season 8 already has an Eddie replacement lined up. Of course, there’s no real stand-in for Eddie’s character or, by extension, the relationship he has with Buck. Whether distance makes the heart grow fonder or best friends simply become roommates, Buck living in Eddie’s house will undoubtedly make for an interesting relationship development in 9-1-1.
