Days of Our Lives' Martha Madison revealed how she's approaching the complicated story with EJ defending Johnny and Belle prosecuting him.
Lovers EJ and Belle are facing off against each other in the courtroom on Days of Our Lives. The situation is quite offbeat because the trial is for EJ’s son Johnny, who’s been accused of shooting EJ, who has decided to represent him in court. Belle had recused herself because of her relationship with EJ, but he managed to get that reversed, and now the DA is also the prosecutor. Martha Madison recently opened up about the storyline and explained how Belle and EJ bring the heat.
Belle Hits the Court
Madison had a conversation with Soap Opera Digest and reflected on Belle’s power move as District Attorney, and how it set the stage for major conflicts, sly strategy, and unexpected sparks. Belle had returned to Salem for Doug’s funeral and wasn’t planning on staying until she got the offer to be the DA. She humorously commented, “If she said no, then everything stayed copacetic. If she said yes, we have a show, right?”
The actress explained that since she wanted to be a lawyer growing up, having her character become one was the perfect choice. While legalese can be somewhat daunting, she’s got it covered because, hilariously, “I’ve watched enough SVU to know what it all means.”
Law and Lust in Salem
She further explained that in order to be a successful female TV lawyer, one has to reach deep to find their power, “But you can’t be a b**ch about it, because everybody hates that.” She likened it to chess, which involves intelligence and strategy rather than everyone yelling at each other. But Belle and EJ have a relationship despite the fact that they can’t stand each other.
“It’s always been a collection of feelings like guilt and confusion and an undeniable attraction,” she said about Belle and EJ’s (Dan Feuerriegel) relationship. “And she’s battling with all of that.” However, she enjoys working with Feuerriegel as a scene partner, remarking that the dynamic of Belle being conflicted and attracted to a bad boy is something she relishes playing.
