Bengals still refuse to change language in Shemar Stewart contract talks

Bengals refusing to change language in contract talks with rookie

The Cincinnati Bengals' rookies reported to start training camp on Saturday, but edge-rusher Shemar Stewart remains unsigned amid a tense contract standoff. The holdup stems from a significant language issue that gives the Bengals the authority to void all future guarantees if Stewart breaches certain contract terms. This is a new standard the team is trying to put into contracts that has not been done for past rookies.

Stewart has skipped most of the offseason workouts and minicamps, citing concern and frustration over the contract language. He has made it clear that he will not work with the team until the concerns are addressed. But it appears that the Bengals will stick to their guns and not budge in changing the language. Because of this, it now raises questions as to how this standstill will come to a conclusion.

For weeks, it was thought that one side would have to budge. Either Stewart signs the deal and the language is kept in the contract, or the Bengals remove the language, which would allow Stewart to sign. Now, it appears that this is unlikely to happen as both sides remain adamant in their stances.

Recently, due to Stewart working out with Texas A&M, recent speculation has surfaced that Stewart may try to return to college. This, however is unlikely due to NCAA eligibility rules, and Stewart has denied these rumors. But if Stewart and the team cannot come to an agreement, there is a possibility he may just hold out for the entire year.

The Bengals have other questions to answer as well. Another Bengals edge-rusher in Trey Hendrickson, is also seeking a new deal. Though his holdout seems to be more due to money rather than contract language. Without Hendrickson or Stewart potentially in 2025, the Bengals' defensive line would be largely unproven and not talented enough. And it appears that neither deal is particularly close to being complete.

This standoff for Stewart really hurts his development, especially due to the raw ability he possesses. If the Bengals want to try and contend in 2025, it will be crucial to get Stewart's deal done soon, to allow him reps on the field to improve his game.
