The Buffalo Bills cornerbacks have received a lot of love for their consistent play in recent years, and the folks at Pro Football Focus have taken notice.
In their ranking of NFL cornerbacks, PFF listed Christian Benford eighth in the league and Taron Johnson 20th, making them one of the best CB duos in the game.
For Johnson, he is now seven years into his career and has started getting praise over the last couple years, which has been long overdue. The 2018 fourth-round pick out of Weber State was a second-team All-Pro in his last fully healthy season (2023). He missed five games last year with injury, but PFF didn't forget the level of player he is.
While Johnson landed at number 20 on PFF's ranking, there is only one nickel corner ranked ahead of him on the list (Cooper DeJean), alluding to the fact that the Bills have one of the best slot defenders in the game.
Johnson has been a mainstay in the slot for head coach Sean McDermott, and that should continue into 2025.
In his seven-year career (all in Buffalo), he has recorded seven interceptions, three of which went for touchdowns, including a 101-yard pick-six in the 2020 divisional round. He also has 51 pass breakups and nine forced fumbles to go with 576 tackles.
PFF's breakdown on Johnson can be found below:
Injuries interrupted Johnson’s 2024 season, but his PFF advanced coverage grade across the past three years ranks fourth among cornerbacks. His 75.9 standard PFF coverage grade in the slot since 2023 places eighth, while his 38 pass stops rank fourth.
