Blackhawks Sign Depth Forward Zach Sanford

   

Well-traveled journeyman gives Chicago minor-league depth with call-up possibilities.

The Chicago Blackhawks today agreed to terms with journeyman forward Zach Sanford on a one-year, two-way contract that runs through the 2024-25 season and has a $775,000 salary cap hit.

The Blackhawks claimed the 29-year-old Sanford off waivers on Jan. 6, when the team was hit hardest by injuries and just a day after Connor Bedard suffered a broken jaw in New Jersey.

Sanford appeared in 18 games with Chicago and posted four assists before being sent to AHL Rockford where he finished the season with three goals and six points in 13 regular-season games. He added two goals and two assists in the IceHogs' four playoff games.

Prior to Chicago's waiver claim, the 6-foot-4, 206-pound native of Salem, Massachusetts had two assist in 11 games with Arizona in 2023-24. Over a total of seven NHL seasons with seven teams, Sanford has career totals of 49 goals and 55 assists in 183 games.

He's also played for Washington, which him drafted 61st overall in 2013, St. Louis, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Nashville.

Sanford skated two season with Boston College before turning pro.
