Bleacher Report's Moe Moton identified one move each team still needs to make this offseason. A majority of Saints fans and analysts have their eyes on cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., however, Moton went a different way. He said the Saints should sign Carson Wentz to provide a veteran presence in their quarterback room.
On paper, this move makes sense for the Saints. Their quarterback room consists of Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, Jake Haener and Hunter Dekkers. Rattler has the most experience in the group with six starts. Shough and Dekkers are both rookies as well. It would be a smart idea to bring in an established veteran quarterback.
However, some can argue that the Saints don’t need a veteran quarterback because of their coaching staff. They have three former NFL quarterbacks on their staff including head coach Kellen Moore. These coaches can fill the vacancy of a veteran quarterback and help their young players develop.
How does Carson Wentz fit in the Saints quarterback room?
Moton mainly talks about how Wentz could provide competition to the young quarterbacks, but that’s not the only way he would contribute. If he made the roster, he could be a valuable backup to the Saints. He would be important on the sideline helping the starter analyze defenses and giving them tips after drives.
As Moton mentioned, Wentz is capable of taking care of business if called upon. The Saints have dealt with many injuries recently, the team can’t bank on anyone staying healthy. Just last year, the Saints lost Derek Carr to injury for most of the season. If the starter does get injured, having an experienced quarterback who can come in is helpful.
At the end of the day, Carson Wentz remains a viable option for the Saints in free agency. It all depends on how Kellen Moore feels about the quarterback room. If he wants to bolster it with an established veteran, then Wentz would be a great addition.
