Blockbuster 'The Last of Us' continues with season 2 while reaching 'huge' viewership

Without waiting for the end of season 1, HBO immediately announced that the crew of The Last of Us is continuing with season 2.

The speed of making The Last of Us is even faster than the growth and spread of fungus, Variety magazine recently humorously commented when Neil Druckmann, the project's producer and creative director of the game of the same name, representing HBO, announced to the media.

The filmmaker said: "I am delighted and grateful to the many viewers who have felt and immersed themselves in the small-screen journey of the two characters Joel and Ellie... Now, we are completely excited that we can continue to 'fight' with the audience in season 2!".

The above move was released by HBO when the first two episodes of The Last of Us achieved "huge" views on HBO and the online movie viewing platform HBO Max. In the US alone, on both channels, episode 1 of the film reached 4.7 million views during its initial release and episode 2 saw an increase in views to 5.7 million views. Up to now, in the domestic market alone, episode 1 of The Last of Us has reached a total of 22 million views since its release on January 15 (local time).

The horror, survival film The Last of Us is adapted from the video game of the same name by game company Naughty Dog, set in a post-apocalyptic setting when a parasitic fungus on humans is discovered, in just a short time, a pandemic breaks out, humanity is almost wiped out. Years later, amidst the ruins, Joel and Ellie (played by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, respectively) - a 14-year-old girl immune to the flesh-eating fungus - unexpectedly find themselves on the same unwanted journey, and Joel must escort Ellie to the end of the road in exchange for what he needs...

The unlikely journey between a human life-bearer and a pragmatist unexpectedly received rave reviews from film critics for its quality of adaptation. The film received a 97% rating, a "fresh" certification, and a series of "winged compliments". Episode 3 will air next Sunday (US time).

One of the film's producers, Craig Mazin (who was behind the HBO miniseries Chernobyl), thanked the audience for helping the project "roll" again. "The audience has given us a chance," he said. "As a fan of the world that Neil Druckmann and Naughty Dog have created, I couldn't be more ready to embark on this journey again." It's unclear when The Last of Us season 2 is expected to air.
