There is a reason guys like Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, and others are the way they are when it comes to the QB position. There is a reason they are as successful as they are, despite not always having great receivers.
The Denver Broncos want Bo Nix to get to that level one day, and I don't mean skill, but the level of elevating your teammates so much so that you win as much as they have without having superstar players in your WR room. And I know what some will say -- that Mahomes has had Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, and Brady has had Gronkowski. Yes, this is true, but for Mahomes ' last two rings, his best receiver has been JuJu Smith-Schuster and rookie Rashee Rice. Kelce is obviously at the end of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs
With the New England Patriots, Brady always had Gronk and whoever else could get open. And even Gronk was often hurt.
These two guys have made due with what they have had by building that chemistry and working with them off the clock. For Mahomes, the last three years or so, he has paid for all of his receivers and tight ends to join him in Dallas, Texas, at his training facility to work all offseason long until camp starts.
Now, Bo Nix is doing something similar, even with his rookies.
"We are actually all taking a little quarterback and receivers retreat, so we are going to go on vacation together, but still go out there and work out, get some routes in, get some throws in. Bo [Nix], of course," rookie wide receiver Pat Bryant said when asked whose idea it was to do the retreat.
"I mean, he called me like the same night of the draft, and then I think three or four days later we were all in the group chat. So, I'm pretty excited to get around the guys. I have heard they like golf, so I have to get my golfing skills up. I'll just control like the music and the speaker."
Nix has all of the potential in the world. We saw once he started getting confident last season, after a few games, that he was the real deal. It just took him a minute. Now that he's played a full season and will have a full offseason as a pro, he should be ready to start off hot.
And you can also add in this little retreat to the equation, where he's going to be getting his rookies ready with chemistry right out of the gates. This also shows a pretty good amount of maturity from Nix, as this is something older QBs usually do, and Nix is doing it in Year 2.
It's clear the Broncos made the right choice last April.
