Breaking down Filip Hronek’s front-loaded Canucks contract extension

Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced on Tuesday afternoon that the club had extended defenceman Filip Hronek to an eight-year contract extension. The contract will cost the Canucks $7.25 million against their salary cap annually.

With the help of Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, we can see the year-by-year breakdown for Hronek’s extension:

Year One (2024-2025): $5.5 million in salary, $4 million in signing bonus. No trade protection.

Year Two (2025-2026): $5 million in salary, $4 million in signing bonus. Full no-movement clause.

Year Three (2026-2027): $6.75 million in salary, no signing bonus. Full no-movement clause.

Year Four (2027-2028): $4.4 million in salary, $4 million in signing bonus. Full no-movement clause.

Year Five (2028-2029): $3.7 million in salary, $3 million in signing bonus. 15-team modified no-trade clause.

Year Six (2029-2030): $4.25 million in salary, $2 million in signing bonus. 15-team modified no-trade clause.

Year Seven (2030-2031): $3.7 million in salary, $2 million in signing bonus. 15-team modified no-trade clause.

Year Eight (2031-2032): $3.7 million in salary, $2 million in signing bonus. 15-team modified no-trade clause.

It is interesting to note that there is no signing bonus for year three in what projects to be a potential lockout. Bonuses are paid out before the lockout starts, so taking no signing bonus may result in no pay that season.

After it’s all said and done, Hronek will have made $58 million and be ready to sign his next contract at 34 years old. By then, Hronek will have made $67.864 million in his NHL career.

This is the third contract the Czech defenceman has signed in his six-year NHL tenure. His first contract was the three-year entry-level deal that paid him $714K annually. After this, Hronek re-signed with the Detroit Red Wings on another three-year deal that paid him $4.4 million per season.

Hronek’s camp and the Canucks management come to an agreement 29 days after being eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs and just 10 days before the NHL entry draft. Sportsnet 650’s Satiah Shah speculated last week that Vancouver would seriously consider trading the young defenceman if the two sides could not come to terms by the draft.

Luckily for the Canucks, the two sides avoid arbitration and agree on a deal that will retain Filip Hronek for the next eight seasons.
