In the first rookie game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night, Brennan Othmann continued to make his case for an opening night roster spot with the New York Rangers.

He didn’t do anything flashy, but Othmann played a steady and consistent game that if you watched, was clearly noticeable.

Othmann is just a smart player who always seemed to make the correct play when in the offensive zone.

The 21-year-old did a fanatic job finding his teammates in open spaces especially on the power play where Othmann played a pretty substantial role.

With the puck on his stick, Othmann was smooth, never making a sloppy decision and more importantly, he was calm.

Arguably the most impressive aspect of Othmann’s game on Friday night was the way he used his body.

Othmann was seen multiple times being able to keep the puck in the offensive zone just by utilizing his bigger frame. The Flyers had a harder time knocking him off the puck because he was able to out muscle his opponents.

The icing on the cake for Othmann was his shootout winner to give the Rangers a dramatic 4-3 victory.

The win may have not counted for anything, but Othmann delivered when the team needed him most and it showed he is unafraid of being the hero in the biggest of moments.

It’s been encouraging to see Othmann making strides in his development and these next few weeks will be critical in determining where he stands with the Rangers organization going into the 2024-25 season.
