Browns’ Jameis Winston gets brutally honest on embracing new role in Cleveland

In mid-March, Jameis Winston signed with the Cleveland Browns, a move that sparked curiosity and speculation among NFL fans and analysts alike. The former No. 1 overall pick joined the Browns, despite the team expressing full confidence in the return of starter Deshaun Watson from a November shoulder surgery.

Browns QB Jameis Winston might have dropped some breaking news

This likely confirmed what many had already begun to accept: Jameis Winston is embracing a role as a career backup. For Winston, the decision was less about securing a starting position and more about seizing a unique opportunity within the organization.

“A big reason that I wanted to come here was because the opportunity was here for me to serve and to give to my teammates,” Winston said after last Thursday’s OTA session, per Akron Sport Journal’s Chris Easterling. “And [Watson] being one of the best quarterbacks in this league, being a quarterback that I have had to see him grow as a No. 1 draft pick and just see his ascension as a player, I have familiarity with that. So it is an honor to serve him.” Winston and Watson have already developed quite a camraderie.

This statement encapsulates Winston’s mindset and the maturity he brings to the Browns. Despite being a former top pick himself, Winston’s current focus is on contributing to the team’s success in whatever capacity he can. His role, for now, involves supporting Watson as he rehabs his shoulder, a process that has limited Watson to throwing every other day and mostly in individual drills.

Winston has taken advantage of the additional reps available due to Watson’s and second-year QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s limited participation. This has allowed him to immerse himself in new offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey’s system and to work alongside another recent signee, Tyler Huntley, who joined the Browns after four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.

“Yeah, just extreme level of gratitude that we are able to come out here and compete and just get better as a team,” Winston said. “I thoroughly enjoy just developing relationships with my teammates and obviously getting some reps. So that’s pretty fun.”

Winston’s positive attitude and infectious enthusiasm have been evident throughout the Browns’ offseason program. He’s rarely seen without a smile and is consistently offering encouragement to his teammates. His leadership and veteran presence are invaluable, especially considering there’s no guarantee he’ll see significant playing time once the regular season begins.

“I think the most encouraging thing is the ‘All right, if we make a mistake and we go in the room and correct it,’ you see that being corrected the next day on whether it’s similar concepts, the same concept, whatever it is,” Dorsey said.

“So as a veteran guy who’s played a lot of football and seen a lot of things, it’s not like he’s not open to the coaching and not open to the evolution of his game, and kind of how maybe we do things a little different than what he’s used to. So he’s done a great job from a leadership standpoint, from an execution standpoint, continuing to grow and then taking in what we’re talking in there onto the grass.”

Jameis Winston’s journey through the NFL before the Browns

Winston’s journey through the NFL has been one of significant highs and challenging lows. Drafted first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015 after a standout college career at Florida State University, where he won both a national championship and the Heisman Trophy, Winston started 80 of his first 87 NFL games. His tenure with the Bucs was marked by flashes of brilliance but also inconsistency, culminating in a tumultuous 2019 season where he led the league with 30 interceptions despite also throwing for over 5,000 yards and 33 touchdowns.

Reflecting on his career, Winston shared, “I’ve been in every role in terms of the quarterback position in the NFL that they have to offer. So I focus on what I’m grateful for. I’m grateful that I was the No. 1 pick. I’m grateful that I went through some adversity Year 5. I’m grateful that I got to learn from a Hall of Fame head coach and a Hall of Fame quarterback. I’m grateful that I ended up being here with a storied franchise, a culture franchise with an elite fan base. So I’m focused on what I’m grateful for.”

After leaving Tampa Bay, Winston signed with the New Orleans Saints, where he spent four seasons. His time in New Orleans was transformative, as he had the opportunity to learn from head coach Sean Payton and legendary quarterback Drew Brees. Winston’s role shifted from starter to backup, and he embraced the opportunity to learn and grow, both as a player and as a leader.

Now with the Browns, Winston’s role continues to evolve. He brings a wealth of experience and a perspective shaped by both success and adversity. His willingness to embrace a supportive role speaks volumes about his character and his commitment to the team’s success.

As the Browns prepare for the upcoming season, Winston’s presence provides a valuable safety net should Watson or the other quarterbacks face any setbacks. His experience and leadership are assets that can help guide the younger players and maintain a positive and competitive atmosphere within the team.

Looking ahead, the Browns are optimistic about their prospects. With Watson expected to return to full strength, the team aims to build on their potential and make a strong push in the highly competitive AFC North. Winston’s role may primarily be as a mentor and backup, but his influence extends beyond the field. His journey from a top draft pick to a seasoned veteran who embraces every opportunity is an inspiring narrative for the entire team.

In the grand scheme of things, Winston’s presence in Cleveland is about more than just football. It’s about resilience, growth, and the power of a positive mindset. As he continues to integrate into the Browns’ system, Winston’s journey serves as a reminder that every role, no matter how big or small, contributes to the collective success of the team. His story is a testament to the importance of adaptability and gratitude in the face of change, qualities that will undoubtedly benefit the Browns as they strive for excellence in the upcoming season.
