Bruins Defender Is Boston's Latest Breakout Candidate

Don't be surprised if this Boston Bruins defenseman hits a new level in 2024-25.

The Boston Bruins' 2023-24 season proved to be successful. Although they lost several notable players during the offseason before, they exceeded expectations in what was a bridge year. One reason for this was that several of their young players proved to be impactful at the NHL level.

One specific rookie who was quite solid for Boston this past season was Mason Lohrei. The 23-year-old showed promise with the Bruins, recording four goals and 13 points in 41 regular-season games. He then earned himself a permanent spot on the Bruins' blueline during the playoffs, posting one goal and four points in 11 games.

After a successful first NHL season with the Bruins, Lohrei will now look to continue to trend in the right direction and make a more significant impact. When noting that he already looked quite solid as a rookie, he certainly has the potential to break out in a big way in 2024-25.

With the Bruins moving on from Matt Grzelcyk, Derek Forbort, and Kevin Shattenkirk this offseason, Lohrei is expected to receive more consistent playing time. At a minimum, he should be a mainstay on the Bruins' bottom pairing, but he also could flirt with a top-four spot if he continues to improve his all-around game. In addition, given his puck-moving ability and skill, he should also get plenty of reps on their power play.

At 23 years old, Lohrei is very much still developing his game. As he continues to adjust to the NHL level this season, don't be surprised if he hits another level, both offensively and defensively. It will be fun to see what kind of year he has in 2024-25 from here.
