It is time for the Boston Bruins to make a massive decision.
With the 2025 NHL trade deadline one week away, the Bruins are going to be busy. It has been a disappointing season for the Original Six club, as they do not hold a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and have played more games than the teams they are trying to catch. Thus, the possibility of them being sellers at the deadline is absolutely there.
However, the biggest decision they have to make is with pending unrestricted free agent Brad Marchand. Let's look at the Bruins' two options for No. 63 now.
Option 1: Bruins Trade Marchand
The possibility of the Bruins trading Marchand can't be ruled out. A move could occur if the Bruins get a big offer for their captain and he still does not have a contract extension by March 7.
Marchand is too valuable a player for the Bruins to potentially lose for nothing in free agency this summer. This is especially true with the club trending in the wrong direction and possessing a weak prospect pool. Thus, if Marchand is still not signed for next season by next week, the Bruins may have a tough decision to make.
Option 2: Bruins Sign Marchand To Extension
The potential of Marchand and the Bruins getting a contract extension done is undoubtedly still there. On Feb. 23, Bruins GM Don Sweeney confirmed to reporters that his goal still is to get a new deal finalized with Marchand.
It is easy to understand why Sweeney is still hoping to get a new deal done with Marchand. He is still one of Boston's top players, as his 21 goals and 47 points in 59 games this season show. In addition, he has put together a legendary 16-year stint as a Bruin, so it would be nice to see him finish his final years in Boston. However, until an extension is done, trade speculation surrounding Marchand will only continue.
It is going to be fascinating to see what the Bruins end up doing with Marchand from here. There are good points to be had on both sides of the argument. Please vote in the poll above to share your thoughts on what the Bruins should do with Marchand.
