The Boston Bruins blew up their roster on trade deadline day. Brad Marchand, Brandon Carlo, and Charlie Coyle were all dealt on March 7, while Trent Frederic, Max Jones, and Justin Brazeau were also moved by the Bruins earlier in the month.
Seeing the Bruins have a fire sale was not particularly surprising. After entering the season with high expectations, they have underachieved and do not hold a playoff spot. It was clear the club needed to make changes, and a new era in Boston has begun because of it.
While the majority of the Bruins' trade candidates leading up to the deadline were moved, forward Morgan Geekie notably was not. With this, the Bruins' next move should be to sign No. 39 to a contract extension.
Geekie is a pending restricted free agent, meaning he will still be under team control this off-season. However, given how wonderfully he has played down the stretch and the Bruins not taking advantage of his trade value, it would be wise to get him signed to an extension sooner rather than later.
While the Bruins have gotten worse as this season progresses, Geekie has undoubtedly heated up. Over his last 38 games, the Strathclair, Manitoba native has 20 goals and 29 points. He has formed incredible chemistry with David Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha on the first line over this time, so it would be very smart for the Bruins to keep him in Boston.
It will be fascinating to see if the Bruins sign Geekie to a contract extension before the season is complete. He has been one of the rare bright spots on Boston's roster this campaign.
