This Bruins signing was far better than expected in 2023-24.
Last offseason, the Boston Bruins' cap situation forced them to sign bargain players. While this was the case, players like Danton Heinen, James van Riemsdyk, and Kevin Shattenkirk were pretty solid additions and helped the Bruins find some success during their bridge year.
However, when looking at last summer's signings, the Bruins struck gold when they inked Morgan Geekie to a two-year, $4 million contract. The hope was that Geekie would be a solid piece of the Bruins' roster, and he exceeded expectations.
Geekie, 25, broke out for the Bruins last season, setting new career highs with 17 goals, 22 assists, and 39 points in 76 games. With numbers like these, the Strathclair, Manitoba native proved that he can be a solid secondary scorer and impactful middle-six forward.
Morgan Geekie
Geekie's previous best season came in 2022-23 with the Seattle Kraken. In 69 games with the Pacific Division club, he posted nine goals, 28 points, and a plus-14 rating. While it was a solid year for him, the Kraken elected not to send him a qualifying offer, and the Bruins took advantage of it. Given Geekie's breakout season and the Kraken's struggles in 2023-24, it's a decision that Seattle must be feeling some regret about.
Now, Geekie is entering the 2024-25 season with more significant expectations. With Jake DeBrusk walking in free agency and GM Don Sweeney not signing a replacement, Geekie will be one of the several forwards fighting for the second-line right-wing spot.
It will be fun to see what Geekie does for an encore next season. He took a big step forward in his development last year, and there's apparent reason to believe he has not yet hit his ceiling.
