The Providence Bruins have signed defenseman Chris Ortiz to an American Hockey League (AHL) deal for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.
Ortiz initially signed a professional tryout with Providence back on Feb. 20. Since then, the 24-year-old blueliner has appeared in 10 games for the AHL squad, where he has two assists and a plus-4 rating. Clearly, Providence has liked what they are seeing from him, and he has earned this AHL deal for the remainder of the season because of it.
Ortiz also played in 45 games earlier this season with the Wheeling Nailers, where he had five goals, 39 points, and a plus-19 rating. These were certainly solid numbers from the left-shot defenseman, and he will now look to translate some of this offense over to the AHL level after earning this deal from Providence.
Overall, with the Boston Bruins' prospect pool undoubtedly needing more depth, there's no harm in the organization giving Ortiz this AHL deal. He will continue to provide Providence with more depth on their blueline as they prepare for the playoffs. If he performs well with Providence, perhaps the Bruins could look to keep him in their system beyond this season.
