Bruins Trade Brandon Carlo To Maple Leafs In Surprising Deal

The Boston Bruins have traded defenseman Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Fraser Minten, a 2026 first-round pick, and a 2025 fourth-round pick. The Bruins are also retaining 15% of Carlo's salary.

Carlo getting traded is not particularly surprising, as it was known that the Bruins were listening to offers for the right-shot defenseman. However, what makes this move certainly surprising is that the Bruins and Maple Leafs have an intense rivalry. In addition, Carlo will be more than a rental for Toronto, as he is signed until the end of the 2026-27 season with a $4.1 million cap hit.

Carlo, 28, will now provide a serious boost to the right side of the Maple Leafs' defense. Furthermore, due to his steady defensive play and shutdown ability, he should also be a key part of their penalty kill moving forward.

In 617 games over nine seasons with the Bruins, he had 29 goals, 129 points, 949 hits, and a plus-129 rating.

Minten, 20, was selected by the Maple Leafs with the 38th overall pick of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. The young center was considered one of Toronto's top prospect before the move. In 15 NHL games this season, he has two goals and four points. Down in the AHL, he has six goals and 13 points.
