Buffalo Sabres Don’t Sleep on Bedkowski

Big-checking defenseman will be a hit with fans

Buffalo Sabres Don't Sleep on Bedkowski - Die by the Blade

The Buffalo Sabres ticked me off on Saturday, dealing away their 2nd round draft pick. Especially with several 1st round level players still on the board. Big, physical hockey players who play with an edge – that was the theme of Buffalo’s drafting this year. They had a primo opportunity to grab one of the best available. Alas, they made a deal with Pittsburgh instead that hopefully works out for the Sabres. Stay tuned on that one.

The Blue and Gold found a rare gem (at least in these parts) in the 3rd round though. Meet David Bedkowski, a 6′ 4″ right shot defenseman who takes pride in his physical game. He loves to deliver bone rattling checks along the boards or a big open ice hit. Here is a quote from him on https://www.nhl.com/sabres “A big open-ice hit, it can change the course of a game, shift the momentum,” Bedkowski said. “Even those small hits, too, that might not make the highlight reels, that’s gonna wear down on players. When I’m on the ice, opposing forwards know.” Hearing that from a Buffalo Sabres prospect is like music to my ears.

The 71st overall selection played for Owen Sound of the OHL and is notoriously known around the league for his hitting game. He seemed genuinely excited to be joining a blue collar town in Buffalo, as it matches his playing style. He even loves the team colors. Another quote from Bedkowski. “I am what my playstyle is. I’m a heart-and-soul guy, loyal to the soil. Just compete is the name of the game for me. Sacrificing, blocking shots, whatever it is, whatever it takes.” again from https://www.nhl.com/sabres

Buffalo’s 3rd round pick is not flashy, mostly a stay at home defensemen. His stat line last season reflects that with just 3 goals and 4 assists in 35 games. And that is OK. A player in his role needs to take care of business in his own end while bringing the BOOM. Bedkowski is the lunch pail player this team needs, somebody who leaves it all out on the ice. He will work his tail off and back up his teammates until the end. But does he have a path to the NHL? Not as good a percentage as a 2nd round selection, unfortunately. But this kid’s drive and attitude will go a long way in determining that. I wouldn’t doubt him.
