“Buffalo Sabres Part Ways with Brett Murray: The Silent Hero Bids Farewell!”

Winger Brett Murray, who spent the last six seasons with the Rochester Americans and scored a career-high 27 goals in 2024-25, won’t be re-signed by the Buffalo Sabres, Dave Gagner, his agent, told the Times Herald.

Gagner said Rochester general manager Jason Karmanos informed him the Sabres don’t plan to bring back the unrestricted free agent.

Murray played 26 games for the Sabres over parts of four seasons, registering two goals and six points. He played a career-high 19 times in 2021-22 and received a three-game recall last season.

The Amerks, who earned 92 points and advanced to the AHL North Division final in the Calder Cup Playoffs last season, have revamped their roster a bit this summer.

In addition to Murray, an alternate captain and Rochester’s longest-tenured player, the Sabres did not re-sign captain Mason Jobst. The parent team last month inked AHL veterans Mason Geertsen, Zac Jones, Jake Leschyshyn and Carson Meyer for the upcoming season.

Murray, a fourth-round selection in 2016, 99th overall, was the last player in the organization drafted by former GM Tim Murray (no relation), who was fired in 2017.

The 6-foot-5, 228-pound Murray needed time to develop into an NHL prospect. Despite his status as a draft pick, he joined Rochester on an AHL contract in 2019 before earning an entry-level deal in 2020.

He enjoyed a breakout season in the COVID-19 shortened 2020-21 campaign, scoring nine goals and a team-high 20 points in 27 games. He played his first two NHL contests that season.

Murray compiled 100 goals, 206 points and 179 penalty minutes in 325 career games with the Amerks. He recorded 49 points last season, which tied his career high and ranked second on the team.

“I love Rochester as a city,” Murray said following his recall in March. “If I were to go down like I did at the start of the season, I wasn’t too upset about it. As a career, you always want to be in the NHL, but I love Rochester.”

He just finished a one-year, two-way contract worth $350,000 in the minors, according to Puckpedia.com.
