Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar earned his 400th career point and made NHL history against the St. Louis Blues on Feb. 23.
Makar shot the puck from the blueline and Devon Toews deflected it past Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington at 12:11 in the first period.
“Just a perfect shot for him to give me an opportunity to touch that puck, just a generational player, fun to play with,” Toews said about his defensive partner.
“I get to play with some really good players so I just try to get them the puck with time and space. With open opportunities for them to go create because they’re the geniuses out there and I just try to facilitate them.”
The 26-year-old hit the mark in his 374th game, the third-fewest among defensemen in NHL history. Bobby Orr did it in 333 games and Paul Coffey in 359.
Makar leads the league’s defensemen in points (63), goals (22) and power-play goals (9). He is eight assists away from 300 for his career in his sixth season. He is third for average time on ice with 25:48 across the entire league.
