Can Thompson Reach 50 Goals?

The Buffalo Sabres are in the final stretch of the season with six games remaining after a thrilling 6-3 comeback win over the Boston Bruins on Sunday. While the team’s playoff hopes have all but faded, personal milestones have become a driving force for some players—none more so than Tage Thompson.

Sabres forward Tage Thompson scored three times against the Boston Bruins on Sunday, and is third in the NHL with 43 goals this season.

Thompson, who has been the Sabres’ standout performer, reached the 40-goal mark for the second time in his career with a goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. Then, in a stellar performance on Sunday, he completed his second hat trick of the season. Now just seven goals shy of his career-high of 47, Thompson has his sights set on a potential 50-goal season.

“His size, his skill, and that shot—it's unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” said Sabres winger Alex Tuch after Thompson’s performance. “He's been playing a complete game all season, and now the goals are coming in bunches. It’s great to see how far he's come."

After spending most of the season at center, Thompson has shifted to the wing following the Four Nations break, where he’s found even greater success. Playing alongside Zach Benson and rookie Jiri Kulich, Thompson has flourished in his new role.

“His skating has been impressive, and that line has great chemistry. Kulich is finding his form, and it's giving Tage the freedom to really take off,” said head coach Lindy Ruff. “Playing on the wing allows him to capitalize on opportunities he might not get as a center.”

The Sabres wrap up their three-game homestand Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes before hitting the road for three consecutive games, including a weekend in Florida facing the Panthers and Lightning.

Can Thompson hit 50? The race is on, and Sabres fans are watching closely as the season winds down.
