Canadiens: Farrell Rewarded With New Contract

Montreal Canadiens GM Kent Hughes is quite busy these days, having made two trades and signed free agents for the big club. He’s now signing players for the Habs’ farm team, the Laval Rocket.

At the top of his list of signatures was left winger Sean Farrell, a fourth-round pick at the 2020 draft. In his second season as a pro, the 23-year-old showed significant improvement, especially in the second half of the season. From 28 points in 47 games in his first campaign with the Rocket, he went to 44 points in 67 games in his sophomore season. What’s even more impressive, however, is the fact that he was blanked in his first 11 games, which means that he got his 44 points in 56 games, which works out to 0.79 points-per-game.

He also stayed red hot in the playoffs, putting up 10 points in 13 games and playing a significant role in the Rocket’s journey to the conference final. He put pen to paper on a one-year two-way deal with an AAV of $775,000. While this is a lower cap hit than his ELC, it’s important to remember that his minors’ salary in his first contract stood at $80,000; this upcoming season, it will stand at $90,000.

To date, he has only played six NHL games with the Canadiens, at the tail end of his NCAA career when he first signed his ELC. The 5-foot-9, 182-pound forward may not be big, but he does play with a lot of heart.

Hughes also made other signings for the Rocket over the last few days, with defensemen William Trudeau, Marc Del Gaizo, and Nate Clurman. That’s on top of the signings made by the Rocket with defensemen Wyatte Wylie and Ryan O’Rourke and forward Mark Estapa.
