Canadiens: Patrik Laine Opens Up About Mental Health Experience

In a video posted to the mental health initiative Instagram page From Us to You, Laine shared advice given to him when dealing with his own internal demons

Earlier this morning, Montreal Canadiens forward Patrik Laine posted a video to the Instagram page of his mental health initiative From Us to You and spoke about his own experience.

In the video, the Finnish sniper offered this advice:

“I think one of the best [pieces of] advice ever given to me was to be brave enough to ask for help. Personally, I’ve struggled with that a lot. I feel like with a lot of people there is a lot of shame, a lot of being too proud to reach out and ask for help.”

Laine added that talking is the best medicine and those around you want to help. He mentioned that he does this through meeting with a therapist three times a week and that it has been “a lifesaver.”

Laine entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance program after appearing in 18 regular season games last season. His reasoning was to focus on aspects of his life that weren’t specifically hockey-related, trying to refocus and be able to be less hard on himself.

He and his fiancée Jordan Leigh launched the initiative this Summer once he exited the program. The couple said that they started the initiative after people reached out to Laine, sharing their own stories. The Linktree associated with their social media pages encourages people to submit their own stories via video or written email.

Laine was traded to Montreal from Columbus this Summer and is looking to have an impactful debut for the Habs come the start of the 2024-25 campaign.
