Cardinals worked out 3 QBs, including former playoff starter

The Arizona Cardinals officially signed quarterback Anthony Brown Jr. to the practice squad Wednesday following the departure of Desmond Ridder to the Las Vegas Raiders’ active roster.

Brown was one of three quarterbacks that had tryouts with the Cardinals Tuesday, joining Jake Luton and John Wolford.

Here are the details of their experience in the NFL:

Anthony Brown Jr.; 6-1, 217; Boston College/Oregon; born July 27, 1998

An undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens in 2022, Brown started the final game of the season because of injuries to Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley. In the 27-16 loss to the Bengals, he completed 19-of-44 passes for 286 yards with no touchdowns, two interceptions and a lost fumble. His passer rating was 46.2.

Brown was waived by the Ravens on Aug. 29, 2023 and was signed to the practice squad the following day only to be released Sept. 4. Out of football for the remainder of the season, he signed a futures contract with the Raiders on Jan. 8, 2024. Browns was waived on Aug. 6, signed four days later by the Bills and then waived Aug. 26.

Jake Luton; 6-6, 224; Idaho/Ventura College/Oregon State; born April 11, 1996.

After being selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2020 draft, Luton has had stints with the Jaguars, Seahawks, Dolphins, Saints and Panthers, mostly on practice squads. His only game experience were three starts (all losses) for Jacksonville in 2020 where he completed 60-of-110 passes for 624 yards with two touchdowns, six interceptions and a rating of 54.5. He hasn’t been with a team since being released from Carolina’s practice squad on Dec. 20, 2023.

John Wolford; 6-1, 218; Wake Forest; born Oct. 16, 1995

Wolford entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Jets in 2018. In 2019, he played for the Arizona Hotshots of the AAF (Alliance of American Football). In seven starts and five victories, he completed 130-of-205 passes for 1,616 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The following year he was with the Rams and started against the Cardinals because of a Jared Goff injury in the final game of the season. The winner would advance to the playoffs. His first pass was intercepted by linebacker Jordan Hicks, but the Rams won 18-7. Wolford completed 22-of-38 passes for 231 yards and a 64.7 passer rating. He also rushed for 56 yards on six attempts. For his career, he played seven games with four starts, all with the Rams. He even started a playoff game in 2020.

Wolford was with the Buccaneers in 2023, but was inactive for 10 games. He was released by Tampa Bay this year on Aug. 27.
